Nafas emerges from Ghatel, a series mapping aerial views of Qanat systems, as embossments of Asgary's breath on cotton rag paper. This psychomagic act is further transformed into an optically clear three-dimensional resin print of each breath. Mirroring water and geological form, Asgary seeks to render the hidden labor behind these ancient waterways visible, making the invisibility of labor—every breath that shaped the waterways and every breath that was lost—visible as she traces her own lineage across time. In Farsi and Arabic, "nafas" means breath or air; it is a life-sustaining force that symbolizes existence, the essence of one's being, and is used as a term of endearment.
