We welcome Sholeh Asgary for the sixth installment of Cicada. Drawing from themes that are navigated throughout her practice and works, Asgary continues to investigate processes surrounding one’s relationship to space and the extraction of its essence as ways of challenging perception of forms and sound; creating new pathways for experience. In this piece entitled ‘Wake’: the track left by a moving body (such as a ship) in a fluid (such as water), a meditative soundscape unveils the possibilities of time, its deconstruction and its abstraction through multiple realities. The voice becomes a vessel for this embodiment, a sonic reimagining of the concept of time that flows in movement, in space and in aural histories.

I was thinking of what my voice might sound like if it were to travel through my death and back 1,000 times. Around the time that I made this recording, I was thinking about distance and travel through time. Not necessarily about time travel, but how the experiences of different places have their own time structures. In doing so, I was driven by my contemplation of what life in a parallel could sound or feel like if it were to travel and meet another parallel, and with it, all the multitudes it carries, or, the diasporic imaginary.
